JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Mines def. Western, 4-0
Records: Western 1-10-3 overall (1-3-3 RMAC), CSM 9-2-1 (6-1)
Location: Stermole Soccer Stadium, Golden, Colo.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mountaineers earned the game's opening shot on goal as a long pass from midfield was dropping into the box where Sarah Connolly flicked it forward on goal with a header, but Mines goalkeeper Allie Lundgren made the save to keep the game scoreless in its fifth minute.
- Ten minutes later, though, Mines picked up the first of its three goals in the opening half. A long pass from Lindsay Jeans down the middle was corralled by Bella Campos and as she was crossing left to right, she snapped a shot back across her body that tipped off the gloves of Mountaineer keeper Aubree Orosco and slid inside the left post in the 17th.
- Another long pass set up Mines' second goal as Kaitlyn Manalili was fouled in the penalty box when going up for a header. Afton Rasco was able to convert the penalty kick to double the lead.
- Western pressured forward with its attack after the PK, but Mines activated a quick transition when gaining possession in its own end, sending a pass up the right touch line then lofting yet another long pass over the defense and into the box where Campos collected it and pushed a shot into the back of the net three minutes after the PK goal.
- The Mountaineers were relentless in trying to tilt the pitch downhill in the second half, earning a 9-5 edge in shots and a 7-0 advantage in corner kick opportunities, but it was the Orediggers who scored the only goal of the half to complete the shutout victory.
