Volleyball Plays Hard in their Home Opener

Gunnison, Colo.   The Western Colorado Mountaineer's Volleyball team puts up a fight but falls to Angelo State by a score of 3-0.

Western struck early scoring the first two points of the match 2-0. Angelo State answered back but the Mountaineers maintained their lead all the way up to their fifteenth score, With the score in favor of WCU 15-11, ASU tied the game then took the lead 16-15. A kill by senior Seyun Park assisted by senior Nur Turkmenoglu put the score at 16 a-piece. The first set was a battle, with points back and forth but the four final scores were had by the Belles making them victorious in set one 25-20.

ASU saw a quick 2-0 until WCU scored five in a row 5-2. Points traded, three by three then one by one, eventually saw a 14-14 tie. The Belles took back their lead and went up 18-14 but the Mountaineers stayed resilient scoring three in a row to create a one-point deficit 18-17. An ASU service error and kill by Turkmenoglu awarded Western two more points. In that same time, ASU scored seven to win set two 25-19. 

The Belles, with powerful offense, jumped to a quick 11-3 lead. Western kept battling smacking the ball for kills and playing hard on both sides of the ball. WCU cut ASU's lead down to six, seeing the score at 17-11. The Belles pulled away but the Mountaineers were able to stop their consecutive points, with a few of their own. The final few points were traded and ASU took set three 25-14, winning the match 3-0. 

Junior Olive Rolseth lead the team in kills with 6, followed by three Mountaineers (senior Park, sophomore Kyra Kidd, junior Pelin Askoy) each with four. Senior Turkmenoglu ended with seven digs, 17 assists, and an ace. Sophomore Chinaru Inoue also accumulated seven digs.

Western Colorado Volleyball is back in action on Friday Sept. 13 and Saturday Sept. 14 as they host the Mountaineer Volleyball Classic Tournament.
