Mountaineers Complete Victory Over Eagles

GUNNISON, Colo. After trailing six in the early minutes of the game, Western Colorado was able to get the 68-61 win against Chadron State after the Eagles tied the game with minutes left in the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • After the Mountaineers were up 39-29 in the first half, the Eagles tied the game at 61, with two minutes, 47 seconds left then Amar Rivers drew a foul from Josh Robinson going to the free throw line to shoot two. Rivers went 1-for-2 from the line but was able to give the Mountaineers the momentum they needed to get the win.  
  • Jamel Hollins was then able to extend the Mountaineers lead to three with a layup in the paint. Another trip to the free-throw line for the Mountaineers would give them a five-point advantage with 17 seconds left. Kade Juelfs then drew a foul by Dalton Paterson to give him a shot at the line. Juelfs went 2-for-2 from the charity stripe giving the Mountaineers their 4th conference win. Chadron State outscored the Mountaineers 32-19 in the second half, shooting 37% from the field.  
  • In the first half of the contest, the Mountaineers started the game down six without scoring the first four minutes of the game. Tyler Halligan had Western Colorado's first points of the half and the Mountaineers did not slow down in the first 20 minutes. After the Eagles registered a free throw to make it a 7-3 start, the Mountaineers tallied back-to-back layups to tie the game at seven. 
  • The Eagles would then go back in front with a layup of their own followed by a layup from Trevin Lieck to tie the contest at nine. Western Colorado took control of the quarter from there as they did not give up another lead and with 5:33 on the clock had a 13-point lead.  

COURT NOTES 

  • Kade Juelfs led the Mountaineers with 14 points going 5-for-13 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Juelfs also led the Mountaineers in rebounds with seven boards in the contest.  
  • Jamel Hollins also registered seven rebounds for the Mountaineers, while collecting nine points.
