Juelfs' Career-High 34 Points Lead Mountaineers to Comeback Win

GUNNISON, Colo.  For the second time this season, the Mountaineers were able to sweep their weekend homestand after defeating the Cougars 80-78. The Mountaineers came back from a 17-point deficit in the second half as they went on a 17-point run of their own to set up the comeback win.  

Kade Juelfs hit a career-high 34 points going 8-for-13 from the field, 5-for-8 from 3-point range and 13-for-15 from the free throw line.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • It took the Mountaineers three minutes to find their rhythm after the Cougars collected the game's first four points. The Mountaineers were down six with 14 minutes, 16 seconds left in the half but cut the deficit to three with a three-pointer by Kade Juelfs. The Cougars would respond and eventually grow their lead back up to 11.  
  • With 11:38 left in the first half, a Bradley Land would extend Colorado Christian's lead to 14 points with a score of 23-9. Juelfs would step up again for Western Colorado with a three-pointer, but the Cougars returned the favor with a three-pointer of their own.  
  • Colorado Christian's biggest lead of the night was 17 points with just over nine minutes to go in the first half.  
  • Western Colorado would then chip away at the Cougars lead as Xavier Harris and Trevin Leick went to the free throw line back-to-back for the Mountaineers and scored a combined four points, which gave the Mountaineers the momentum they needed to get back into the game. Harris' free throws started a run of 17 consecutive points from the home squad.  
  • The Mountaineers then took their first lead of the game with a jumper by Kade Juelfs. Three free throws from the Mountaineers would then extend their lead by four. A good 3-pointer by Noah Kon would give the Mountaineers a one-point lead going into halftime.  
  • Kade Juelfs continued to lead the Mountaineers offensively in the second half with 18 points. The Cougars held the lead for just 1:05 in the second half as the Mountaineers held them to 37-percent shooting from the field and 18-percent shooting from beyond the arc.  
  • Western Colorado lost its lead in the middle of the second half and was down six points putting them back on the comeback trail. Juelfs then registered seven consecutive points putting the Mountaineers up one. Christian Still then got fouled sending him to the line and going one-for-one.  
  • Tyler Halligan capped the win off the for the Mountaineers with two free throws of his own with 56 seconds left. Noah Kon would then record one last 3-pointer for the Cougars, but it was not enough as there was only six seconds left on the clock.  

COURT NOTES 

  • The Mountaineers found that their lucky number was 40 against the Cougars as they recorded 40 points in both halves well the Cougars registered 39 points per half.  
  • While Juelfs led the Mountaineers with 34 points. Christian Still and Tyler Halligan both scored in double-digits was well with 12 and 10 points, respectively.  
  • Jamel Hollins led Western Colorado with seven rebounds, including four defensive boards. Halligan and Xavier Harris each recorded a pair of steals, while Amar Rivers came up with the Mountaineers' lone blocked shot.

Western Colorado will head to Alamosa, Colo., on Friday, February 16 to face the Grizzlies at 7:30 p.m., before the go to Durango, Colo., to take on Fort Lewis on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m.
