GUNNISON, Colo.Â
Erika Lane's 15 points led the Mountaineers Friday night but visiting Regis University pushed four players into double digits during the Rangers' 71-56 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's basketball victory at Paul Wright Gym.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Regis def. Western, 71-56
Records: Western 6-18 overall (4-15 RMAC), Regis 21-5 (16-4)
Location: Paul Wright Gym, Gunnison, Colo.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A layup by Ivey Schmidt opened the scoring and an offensive rebound and putback by Brooklyn Seymour gave Western another lead, at 4-2, but Josey Ryan buried a 3-pointer the Rangers' next time down the court and Regis would never trail again.
- The Mountaineers stayed within striking distance through much of the first quarter but found themselves down by nine (20-11) nearing the end of the frame. A jumper by Schmidt cut into that deficit and a defensive rebound at one end and layup in the offensive end by Seymour pulled Western to within five.
- The Mountaineers finished the quarter down by seven, 22-15, despite hitting 60 percent (6-of-10) from the floor. The difference on the scoreboard came from Regis dropping in 4 of 8 from behind the arc while Western was just 1 of 4 from long range.
- Regis opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer to build its first double-digit advantage, building the lead to as many as 19 before taking a 41-23 lead into the halftime break.
- The Mountaineers came out strong out of the break, whittling the gap down to just 11 before Regis would embark on a 9-0 run to elevate the advantage to 20 (55-35).
- The gap lessened in the final minutes of the game as Western outscored the Rangers 9-1 in the final four minutes, but the late surge wasn't enough to overcome the earlier 20+ point deficits.
COURT NOTES
- Lane's 15-point night was only a point shy of her career high, which she recorded in the Mountaineers' most recent game on Feb. 17.
- Lane and Alyssa Eckroth led Western in rebounding, each pulling down six boards, helping the Mountaineers pull even, 34-34, with the Rangers off the glass.
- Both teams were solid from the free throw line. Western was 11-for-13 from the stripe, while the Rangers were 11-for 14.
- Regis' skill from long range in the opening 10 minutes did not last. They were 4 of 8 in the first quarter but only 4 of 13 the rest of the game. Western hit only two 3-pointers in the first half, but dropped in five over the final 20 minutes of action.
- Lane and Jayda Maves each had three of Western's seven treys.
- The difference in total turnovers by each team was negligible – 12 by Western and 11 by Regis – but the Rangers forged a 15-5 advantage in points off of turnovers over the course of the game.
- Regis' Ryan led all scorers with 20 points, with teammate Athena Saragoza adding 16 more.
