Strong First Half Not Enough Against Skyhawks

DURANGO Colo.  Western Colorado went into the second half down just eight points to No. 3 Fort Lewis, as the Mountaineers went 48-percent shooting from the field in the first half. The Skyhawks scored 50 points in the second half leading to a 95-71 loss for Western Colorado.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Mountaineers were down 4-0 to start the first half but quickly took their first lead of the first half as Kade Juelfs made a jumper from inside the paint and then a 3-pointer off a defensive rebound from Andrew Reichart. It continued to be a back-and-forth affair as Malik Whitaker made back-to-back shots of his own.  
  • Reichart and Christian Still responded for the Mountaineers with a jumper inside the paint and a 3-pointer of their own. Neither team went on a very big run in the first half, as the Skyhawks' lead of 10-points with 5 minutes, 35 seconds on the clock was their biggest lead of the half. The Mountaineers shot 50-percent from the field in the first half, while their counterpart shot 48-percent from the field. Western Colorado capitalized off offensive rebounds in the first half as they scored off all their second chance opportunities.  
  • Fort Lewis showed all their offensive power in the second half as the nation's third best team shot 55-percent from the field with Obi Agbim and Isaiah Thompson registered 11 points apiece in the game's final 20 minutes. The Skyhawks dominated from inside the paint where they scored 30 of their 50 points, while their bench was responsible for 23 points in the second half. Fort Lewis' defensive was also strong in the second half, collecting 19 rebounds including 12 defensive boards.  

COURT NOTES 

  • Amar River led the Mountaineers with 11-points on the night going 4-for-7 from the field. Spencer Wright and Kade Juelfs each registered 10-points, while Juelfs went 4-for-9 from the field and 2-for-7 from the field. Wright went 3-for-4 from both the field and 3-point range.  
  • Jonathan McCloud led the Mountaineers with eight points in the second half as Western Colorado shot 38-percent from the field and 29-percent from 3-point range. Juelfs led the Mountaineers in the first half with eight points of his own.  
  • Defensively, Western Colorado tallied 30 rebounds in Whalen Gym including five from Juelfs. As a team, the Mountaineers had six team rebounds with four of those coming offensively. Rivers registered the Mountaineers lone steal of the night and added another block to his season total of 19.  

UP NEXT 

The Mountaineers will return to Paul Wright Gym in Gunnison, Colo., next weekend for the final time this regular season as they take on Regis at 7 p.m., on Friday, Feb. 23. Western Colorado will then take on University of Colorado Colorado Springs on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 5 p.m.
