Western Colorado falls short against UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Twelve turnovers in the first half haunted the Mountaineers as University of Colorado Colorado Springs came up with a 66-47 win. Jayda Maves and Rachel Cockman led the offense as both registered a game-high 17 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Both the Mountaineers and Mountain Lions got off to a slow start in the first quarter combining for 21 points. Western Colorado had the one-point edge going into the second quarter but Maison White and the rest of her squad heated up in the final 10 minutes of the first half, outscoring Western Colorado 23-7.  

  • The Mountaineers came out strong in the second half, scoring the first four points before Jayda Maves fouled Amyah Allen Moore sending her to the free throw line. The Mountain Lions saw their biggest lead of 21 with one minute and 38 seconds left in the third quarter.  

  • Western Colorado outscored UCCS in the final ten minutes of the contest 17-16 shrinking the Mountain Lions final margin to 19. The Mountaineers defense held UCCS to just 12 attempts from the field.  

COURT NOTES 

  • Jayda Maves and Rachel Cockman each recorded 17 points for the Mountaineers as the team shot 30% from the field and 72% from beyond the arch in the contest.  

  • Maves also had a team high eight rebounds, while Cockman, Brooklyn Seymour and Olivia Towns all recorded a block.  

UP NEXT 

The Mountaineers will travel to South Dakota to face a pair of RMAC opponents next weekend starting with South Dakota Mines in Rapid City, S.D., on Friday, January 12, with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m. Western Colorado will then go to Spearfish, S.D., to face off against Black Hills State on Saturday, January 13 with tipoff slated for 4 p.m.
