Mountaineers open RMAC Play With a win

Pueblo, Colo.  Western Colorado collected their first conference win of the season as they defeated Colorado State University Pueblo 30-14 in PUeblo, Colo.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The first quarter was a game of special teams for both squads as Western Colorado was able to block a punt to set themselves up early in the red zone. Deyvon Butler was then able to put the Mountaineers on the board with a two-yard rushing touchdown.  

  • The Mountaineers then secured the ball on a fumble recovery to put them inside field goal range. Adam Tasei was able to extend his team's lead to 10-0, before the Pack responded with a punt return good for their first touchdown of the day.  

  • Butler scored his second touchdown of the game in the second quarter on a five-yard rush. Tasei once again added to Western Colorado's score by making his second field goal. The Mountaineers closed the first half with another touchdown, as Drew Nash was able to sneak into the end zone to give his team a 20-point lead.  

  • In the second half, the ThunderWolves scored the lone touchdown of the third quarter, making it a two-possession game.  

  • Tasei then made his third field goal of the game that capped off the Mountaineers 30-14 victory. 
     

FIELD NOTES 

  • Drew Nash threw for 182-yards over 31 attempts.  

  • Butler was the Mountaineers leading rusher with 76 rushing yards and two touchdowns over 17 attempts. Andrew Montez led Western Colorado in passing yards with 55-yards on five completions.  

  • Defensively, Tony Cass recorded eight tackles and forced a fumble, while Ethan Sanchez-Maxwell registered six tackles and two pass breakups. 

UP NEXT 
The Mountaineers will now travel to Chadron, Neb., to take on Chadron State next Saturday (Sept. 23)
