Mountaineers Win Thriller Against Aggies

LOGAN, Utah  Western Colorado defeated NCAA Division I opponent Utah State University in a thriller Monday (December 18th) night. Jayda Maves led the Mountaineers to an exhibition game victory with a 3-pointer to give them the lead with four seconds left on the clock.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Going into the final minute the Mountaineers were down by four points then Rachel Cockman made a three pointer with an assist from Maves to pull Western Colorado within one.  

  • A defensive rebound by Cockman got the Mountaineers the ball with 17 seconds left. Maves eventually got the ball from Ivey Schmidt and made the winning 3-point shot.  

  • The Aggies came out strong in the third quarter outscoring the Mountaineers 19-13, which closed the Mountaineers lead to just two points.  

  • Western Colorado outscored the Aggies in the first half 26-18, while shooting 35-percent from the field in the first quarter. The Mountaineers limited USU to just 8 points in the second quarter.  

COURT NOTES 

  • Cockman recorded a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Schmidt had 11 points, while Maves recorded 8 points.  

  • The Mountaineers went 17-for-55 (30%) from the field in the 40-minute contest while the Aggies shot just 27% from the field.

The Mountaineers will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., after the holiday break on Saturday, January 6, to take on University of Colorado Colorado Springs at 1 p.m.
