GUNNISON, Colo.  Western Colorado will close out the 2023 calendar year with a conference match up with No. 10 Colorado School of Mines on Saturday, December 16 at 1 p.m. The Mountaineers will then hit the road for an exhibition game against Utah State University on Monday, Dec. 18., at 6 p.m.  

Local elementary and middle school students will get into both the women's and men's games for free Saturday afternoon.  

MOUNTAINEERS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023 Stats 

  • The Mountaineers (2-7, 0-4 RMAC) are looking to rebound after falling in a pair of conference matchups last weekend.  The Mountaineers have averaged 58.6 points per game in their first nine games of the season. Defensively, the team ranks fifth in the conference with 36.9 rebounds per game. They rank first in the conference with 29.6 defensive rebounds per game and 266 total defensive boards.   

  • Rachel Cockman continues to be successful on both ends of the ball after recording her fourth double-double of the season, which included 18 points and 11 rebounds. Cockman is tied for fourth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in points per game (17.2), while the junior's field goal percentage of 46.2% ranks sixth in the league.  

  • Ivey Schmidt had an impressive game against Colorado Christian last weekend, where she scored 13 points in the fourth quarter. Through the first nine games of the season, Schmidt has averaged 5.4 rebounds per game, where she ranks 21st in the conference with 7.8 points per game.  

OREDIGGERS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023 Stats  

  • The Orediggers (10-1, 5-0) are looking to keep their eight-game winning streak alive that dates to Nov. 18 against West Texas A&M. Mines leads the RMAC in points per game (76.3) and is second in total points (839). The team's field goal percentage of 41.9% ranks sixth in the conference, while a 37% three-point percentage ranks second in the league.  

  • Ashley Steffeck leads the Orediggers with 19.1 points per game which leads the conference. While leading the conference in points per game, she ranks eighth in assists with 3.5 per game and 38 in 11 games this season. She also leads her team with 6.3 rebounds per game and leads the conference with 37 steals on the season while averaging 3.4 steals per game. The redshirt senior also has 11 blocked shots this season.  In the Orediggers win against the Roadrunners, she scored 26 points included the game winning free throws with seconds left in the game completing the comeback win. 
  • Jenna Siebert has started in ten games this season for Mines averaging 11.5 points per game and 5.1 rebounds per game. She has 51 total rebounds on the season with 32 defensive boards. 

AGGIES HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND | 2023 Stats  

  • The Aggies (3-6) are coming off a loss to Utah Valley and will host Northern Colorado on Saturday, Dec. 16., before the Mountaineer head to Logan, Utah on Monday. Utah State welcomed 12 new athletes to their roster this year including nine transfers and three freshmen. 

  •  As a team, USU has averaged 55.7 points per game with a 40-clip from the field. Cheyenne Stubbs leads the Aggies offensive charge with 15.7 points per game, while making 46% of her shots from the field.  

  • Skye Mills leads the team in rebounding with five rebounds per game and 45 total rebounds.

The Mountaineers will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., after the holiday break on Saturday, January 6, to take on University of Colorado Colorado Springs at 1 p.m.
