Mountaineers dominate against Skyhawks

GUNNISON, Colo.  No. 15 Western Colorado recorded their ninth win of the season with a 57-3 victory over Fort Lewis.   

The Mountaineers offense dominated as they registered 440 rushing yards which is third all-time in team game rushing yards. The offense's 770 yards of total offense is second all-time in team game total offensive yards.  

Before the game, the Mountaineers honored their 15 graduating seniors including Jaden Armbrust, Andrew Arterburn, Wyatt Buhr, Deyvon Butler, Stevie Byron, Tony Cass, Cameron Colangelo, Jalen Graham, Anthony Johnston, Kendall Lightfoot, Trevor Riters, Joseph Roth-Bogrett, Tariq Stewart, Tanner Tomlinson and Malcom Wesley.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • After the Skyhawks opened the game with a field goal the Mountaineers responded with a field goal of their own. But the momentum of the game shifted to Western Colorado's side after Ricky Freymond registered a safety to put his squad up by two.  

  • The offense then got rolling, scoring three touchdowns in the rest of the first half, including a 30-yard run by Braeden Hogan, followed by a touchdown run by Deyvon Butler and a 13-yard touchdown pass from Drew Nash to Sage Yazzie.  

  • Nash's longest pass of the day was a 45-yard touchdown pass to Victory David in the third quarter, that put Western Colorado up by 30 points.  

  • With 2:25 left in the third, Hogan was able to get down the field for a 90-yard touchdown run for his second touchdown of the day.  

  • Christien Manning and Kaiden Hernandez capped off the Mountaineers' 57-3 win with a rushing touchdown each in the fourth.  

 FIELD NOTES 

  • Drew Nash recorded 244 passing yards with two touchdown passes. Josiah Roy also suited up for the Mountaineers and registered 86 passing yards in four completions.  

  • Deyvon Butler collected one touchdown and a season-high 240 rushing yards, while Braeden Hogan had 137 rushing yards with two touchdowns.  

  • Joseph Roth-Bogrett was the Mountaineers leading receiver with 69 yards over three receptions.  

  • Defensively, Kendall Lightfoot led the Mountaineers defense that only allowed the Skyhawks to 185 yards of total offense. Lightfoot registered eight tackles including 1.5 tackles for loss for five yards.  

  • Lightfoot, Anthony Johnston Ricky Freymond and Jalen Graham all had sacks for the Mountaineers with Freymond leading the team with 2.5 sacks for a total of 20 yards.  

  • For the Skyhawks, Braden Wingle only threw for 94 yards with 11 completions.  

  • Parker Cunningham led Fort Lewis' defense with ten tackles while Jacob Penney had eight.
