GOLDEN, Colo. Western Colorado took their first loss of the season to conference rival Colorado School of Mines in snowy Golden, Colo., by a score of 35-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Mountaineers defense showed their grit on the first drive of the game when Ethan Sanchez-Maxwell collected an interception for 32 yards. Western Colorado did not allow the Orediggers to score in the first quarter, but Mines held most of the possession time in the quarter.

Western Colorado's offense was silenced by the Orediggers defense throughout the whole game but did not record a single first down in the first quarter. The offense produced only 82 yards of total offense in the second quarter inclduing their only touchdown of the day, a 31-yard pass from Drew Nash to Cole Riters.

Coming out of halftime, the Mountaineers were only down 14-7 and tried to carry the momentum of Riters touchdown catch over to the second half. But the Orediggers continued to take control outscoring the Mountaineers 28-0 in the last half.
FIELD NOTES

Drew Nash was limited to only 135 passing yards with a 39 percent completion rate (11-for-28). Nash's longest pass of the day was his touchdown pass to Riters for 31 yards.

Deyvon Butler and Braeden Hogan combined for a total of 24 yards in 12 attempts.

The defense was led by Kendall Lightfoot who registered 12 tackles including half a tackle for loss. The Mountaineers were able to register five tackles for loss for a total of four yards. Sanchez-Maxwell recorded a season-high 11 tackles to go along with his interception.

Cy Shope and Wyatt Buhr were able to get through Mines' offensive line and collect a sack a piece on John Matocha.

The Mountaineers will now head back to Gunnison, Colo., and Katy O. Rady Field to compete against Fort Lewis College on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m.
