JUST THE FACTS
Final Score:  Texas Permian Basin def. Western Colorado 34-31 OT.
Records: Western Colorado 0-2, Texas Permian Basin 1-1.
Location: Grande Stadium, Midland, Texas.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mountaineers had opportunity to score in the first quarter, after an eight-play drive that gained 38-yards and stalled on Permian Basin 27-yard line. However, Alec Fonseca couldn't make a difficult 48-yard field goal. Fonseca made up for it at the beginning of the second quarter making a 34-yard field goal, to give Western Colorado a 3-0 lead.
  • With 11:37 left in the second quarter, Texas Permian Basin marched down the field on a nine-play 58-yard drive and scored on a 3-yard touchdown pass to given them a 7-3 lead. After stuffing the Falcons in the redzone, Texas Permian Basin drilled a 40-yard field to extend their lead to 10-3.
  • A few drives later Jalen Graham stripped the Falcons ball carrier, recovered by Jordan Greager and taken to the Falcons 15-yard line, setting up Luke Nethercot to score on the next play on a 15-yard pass to Kai Emmsley – tying the game at 10-10.
  • Early on in the second quarter (12:29) Permian Basin extended their lead to 16-10 – missing the point after touchdown – on a pick six. Following a failed fourth down attempt by the Falcons, the Mountaineers took the lead with 2:32 left in the third quarter – marching down the field and scoring on a five-play drive – on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Nethercot to Sage Yazzie, giving Western a 17-16 lead.
  • Right before the third quarter ended – Western Colorado blocked a punt, which set up the Mountaineers to score. Nethercot rushed for a 30-yard gain, putting the ball on the Falcons two-yard line and then capped the drive off with a two-yard rushing touchdown, putting the Mountaineers up 24-16.
  • On the very next drive, Darrious Gaines intercepted Permian Basin quarterback giving Western the ball on the Falcons 25-yard. Unfortunately, the Mountaineers were unable to capitalize on the great field position. Permian Basin tied the game up – at 24-points apiece - with 2:23, scoring on a 15-yard touchdown pass and then converting the two-point conversion.
  • In overtime, the Falcons scored in two plays to give themselves a 31-24 lead. But, Western Colorado responded with a touchdown of their own on a Connor Desch five-yard touchdown pass to Emmsley. Unfortunately, that would be the final points of the game for the Mountaineers as two drives later Permian Basin would kick a game winning field goal.
