Mountaineer athletics would like to congratulate former Western Colorado University women's basketball head coach
Latricia Trammell, who on Monday (Nov. 7), was named the head coach of the Women's National Basketball Association Dallas Wings.
Â
Trammell was the head women's basketball coach at Western from 2007-2012. During the 2011-12 season, Trammell became the first coach in women's basketball history to make it to the championship game of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament - by beating Metropolitan State University 70-66 in the semi-finals. MSU was ranked #3 in the NCAA D-II at the time.Â
Â
During her time at Western her 65 total wins is fourth all-time and 48 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference wins are third all-time.
Â
Trammell left Western in 2012 and became the head coach at Oklahoma City University. She spent three seasons (2013-15) with Oklahoma City, and won back-to-back NAIA National Championships in 2014 and 2015. Trammell was named NAIA Coach of the Year both seasons. Trammell recorded a record of 85-10 over the course of her time at OKCU.
Â
In the spring of 2015, Trammell joined the Georgia State University women's basketball team – for one season - as an assistant, helping develop the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year (Madison Newby) as the Panthers' staff worked nine new players into the program. Sophomore Makeba Ponder led the league in 3-point baskets made per game. Led by the guards, GSU's defense was second in the Sun Belt in steals.
In 2017, Trammell started her career in the WNBA as an assistant with the San Antonio Stars – now known as the Las Vegas Aces. From 2018-21 she was an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Sparks – tasked primarily with overseeing the defense, Trammell was part of a staff that led a top-three defensive net rating for three consecutive years from 2019 to 2021. Over the past four seasons, Los Angeles also saw four players named to the WNBA All-Defensive teams, including the 2020 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year in Candace Parker.
Â
Overall, she totaled a 150-86 (.664) collegiate coaching record. Prior to joining the collegiate ranks, Trammel spent six years coaching high school girls' basketball in Texas and Oklahoma, tallying a 105-45 (.700) record.
