Fball | 16 Mountaineers earn first, second or honorable mention honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. On Thursday (Nov. 17) the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference announced the 2022 RMAC Football Individual Award Winners, All-Conference rosters and Honorable Mention honorees. Western Colorado had nine Mountaineers earn first or second team honors and had seven named to the honorable mention list.

FIRST TEAM ALL-CONFERENCE
  • Making it onto the first All-Conference team, were Josh Cummings (Offense), Clayton Martin (Offense), Mathyus Su'a (Offense), Cole Riters (Special Teams) and Victory David (Special Teams).
  • Coming out of the backfield, Cummings finished the season with 783 rushing yards and five touchdowns. He Averaged 87-yards per game and 4.8-yards per carry in nine games. His best game came against Colorado Mesa where he rushed for 126-yards and had one touchdown.
  • On the offensive line, at center Martin and at guard Su'a were impressive as anchors on the offensive line. Martin recording 17 pancakes, .5 sacks allowed and one penalty over the course of the season. While Su'a had 31 pancakes, 1.5 sacks allowed and one penalty. As a whole Western averaged 376.6 yards of total offense per game and finished the season with 2,467 yards passing and 1,676 yards rushing. The line also only gave up 24 sacks total.
  • In Riters first year punting, he averaged 42.39 yards per punt, which was the best in the RMAC and 11th best in all of division II. Out of the 34 punts, 15 were downed inside the 20-yard line and 10 were 50 plus yard punts – his longest punt being 58-yards.
  • As a kickoff returner David was the best in the RMAC, averaging a conference high 32-yards per punt and had the longest kickoff return for a touchdown this season of 105-yards – which is a Mountaineer record.
SECOND TEAM ALL-CONFERENCE
  • Earning second team All-Conference honors were Nathan Meyer (Offense), Darrious Gaines (Defense), Carson Mandrell (Defense), and Alec Fonseca (Special Teams).
  • At tight end, Meyer played and started in all 11 games for the Mountaineers and had 23 receptions for 197-yards and one touchdown. His longest reception was 30-yards.
  • Gaines was one of the best corners in the RMAC, breaking up eight passes while also recording three interceptions. He also finished the season 36 tackles – 30 solo – five tackles for loss and had one blocked punt.  
  • Mandrell was the best tackler for Western at linebacker, racking up 85 tackles – 47 solo – and also had 6.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, one pass breakup, one quarterback hurry and one forced fumble.
  • Fonseca finished the season 71.43 field goal percentage, making 15 out of 21 attempts and had a career long 53-yard field goal – which is the seventh longest field goal all-time in Mountaineer history.
