Hardrockers hand Mountaineers first RMAC loss

GUNNISON, Colorado.  Western Colorado couldn't get things going on Saturday (Oct. 8) resulting in them losing 10-38 to South Dakota Mines.

Final Score:  South Dakota def. Western Colorado 38-10.
Records: Western Colorado 3-3 (3-1, RMAC), South Dakota 4-2 (3-1, RMAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • To start the game, both teams exchanged blows – South Dakota scoring on a 52-yard touchdown pass to complete a seven-play drive. Then Connor Desch connected with Malik White on a 75-yard touchdown pass on the first play.
  • ­­Five drives later the Hardrockers retook the lead on a 28-yard rushing touchdown, giving them a 14-7 lead. Before the first quarter ended, Alec Fonseca made a 28-yard field goal cutting the lead to 14-10.
  • For the remainder of the game it was all South Dakota Mines. They scored 10-points in the second quarter on a 21-yard field goal attempt and five-yard touchdown pass. At halftime the score was 28-10.
  • In the third quarter with 1:50 left in the quarter, the Hardrockers went on a 10-play drive and scored on a 16-yard rushing touchdown, putting the score at 31-10.
  • The final score of the game came in the fourth quarter with 2:39 left as South Dakota went on a 13-play drive and capped it with an eight-yard rushing touchdown.   
FIELD NOTES
  • Desch finished with 165-yards rushing (12-of-21) and one touchdown. Josh Cummings had a team high 38-yards rushing in the game. White was the leading receiver for the Mountaineers with 75-yards.
  • Carson Mandrell finished the game with 11 tackles, while Tim Mullin pitched in with eight tackles.
