HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the first 10 minutes of the game it was all about the defenses, as both offenses struggled to put together any sort of drive. However, that all changed when Black Hills State got the ball of their 12-yard line with 5:43 left on the clock in the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets put together a seven-play drive that ended with a 42-yard rushing touchdown.
  • Early on into the second quarter, Black Hills State extended their lead to 14-0 by sticking to the ground game. They rushed for 80-yards on the drive – starting with the ball on their 20-yard line, after an interception in the endzone – and ended the drive with a three-yard rushing touchdown.
  • The Yellow Jackets lead grew to 21-0 with 1:51 left on the clock in the second quarter, putting together an 11-play drive that finished with a four-yard pop pass touchdown.
  • The Mountaineers responded with 1:03 left before halftime on a Connor Desch pass that connected with Deyvon Butler for a 21-yard touchdown. Western had a bit of luck on the point after attempt. A high snap forced kicker Alec Fonseca, to have to jump for the ball and then run around before throwing a pass to Jaydon Young who caught it and walked into the endzone for a two-point conversion.
  • On Black Hills State next drive, they threw their second interception of the game to Andrew Arterburn who gave the Mountaineers the ball on Black Hills State 48-yard line. Unfortunately, Western was unable to capitalize on the sudden change.
  • Despite things not going their way at the end of the second quarter, things did go their way on the very first drive of the third quarter.  A Desch 30-yard pass to Josh Cummings and a Desch 18-yard run led to, Butler breaking a tackle and running all the way to the endzone on a 24-yard rushing touchdown. With that score the Mountaineers trailed 15-21.
  • Things continued to go Western's way to start the fourth quarter – leading to a 10-play drive being capped off with a Josh Cummings 15-yard rushing touchdown, giving the Mountaineers a 22-21 lead.
  • That lead didn't last long, due to the Yellow Jackets offense finally waking up in the second half. Black Hills State converted two fourth downs, setting up the opportunity for them to score on a five-yard rushing touchdown to complete a 13-play drive. The Yellow Jackets decided to go for the two-point conversion. Yet, were unsuccessful.
  • Butler and Desch made sure the Yellow Jackets couldn't enjoy their lead, connecting once again for a 39-yard passing touchdown – his second receiving touchdown of the game. Similar to Black Hills State, the Mountaineers tried to convert the two-point conversion. But, were also unsuccessful.
  • The Yellow Jackets had one final drive to try and get into field goal range. However, two back-to-back sacks by; Anthony Johnston, on 3rd-and-10, and Cy Shope, on 4th-and-18, sealed the 28-27 victory.
