HOW IT HAPPENED
- Following the Mountaineers stopping Colorado Mesa on their first drive of the game, Western put together a 13-play drive that ended with Josh Cummings rushing six-yards up the middle for a touchdown. The Mavericks tried to get something going on their next drive. But, Darrious Gaines shut that down picking off Mesa's quarterback giving the Mountaineers the ball on CMU 30-yard line.
- Connor Desch would extend the lead to 14-0 on the first play of the drive, completing a 30-yard touchdown pass to Malik White for a touchdown.
- Prior to the first quarter ending, the Mavericks put themselves in position to score – having possession of the ball on Western's 47-yard line. That led to Colorado Mesa scoring on a three-yard rushing touchdown, trimming the lead to 14-7.
- Victory David helped increase the lead back to 14-points, taking the ensuing kickoff 105-yards for a touchdown. With 3:29 left before halftime, the Mountaineers put together a seven-play scoring drive that saw Deyvon Butler score on an eight-yard rush.
- As halftime approached, the Mavericks completed a 35-yard touchdown pass that cut the lead to 28-14 at halftime.
- In the second half, Colorado Mesa's offense got going. On their second drive in the third quarter they scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown completing a 12-play drive that totaled 75-yards.
- Up 28-21 in the beginning of the fourth quarter, Alec Fonseca helped increase the lead by drilling a 40-yard field goal. On the Mavericks third-drive of the fourth quarter – 8:03 left in the quarter - they scored another touchdown completing a 34-yard touchdown pass cutting the lead to 31-28.
- Colorado Mesa had an opportunity to win the game, as time was close to expiring. However, the Mountaineers defense didn't break leading to the Mavericks being forced to settle for a field goal to send it to overtime.
- In the first overtime neither team was able to score a touchdown, resulting in both kickers coming onto the field and making two field goals – Fonseca's being 24-yards – to send it to a second overtime.
- It took four-plays. But, Western managed to find the endzone as Desch connected with Andrew Montez for a four-yard touchdown reception. Desch then completed the two-point conversion to Daniel Parsek.
- Once again the Mountaineers defense held strong and stopped the Mavericks from scoring, as Western stopped Colorado Mesa from pulling off the comeback.
