GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. --- Western Colorado raced 11 athletes at the Gig Leadbetter Maverick Stampede on Saturday morning as the men's team finished second and the women was non-scoring with only two women running.

The men's team finished second with 29 points, just two points behind the first place Mavericks of Colorado Mesa who had 27 points. Westminster won the women's race with 30 points.

Will Johnson was the top finisher for the Mountaineers, as he placed second overall in a time of 28.29.78 for the 8.8-kilometer course.

Finishing in third and fourth behind Johnson were Mountaineers
Riley Howard (28:42.04) and
Simon Kelati (28:51.27). Wraping up the men's team scoring was Western Colorado's
Max Sawyer (9th – 29:24.01) and
Patrick Jirele (11th – 30:01.16).

Haley Wood was the top finisher for the women with her time of 20:58.12 for 5-kilometers that earned her a No. 12 finish. As teammate,
Lindsey Kastelle finished two spots back in No. 14, crossing the line in 21:28.44.

The Mountaineers will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 2 as they travel to the Arkansas Chili Pepper Invite.
