Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame coach James "Doc" Hahn passes away

GUNNISON, Colo. --- Western Colorado's all-time winningest women's basketball coach James "Doc" Hahn died on Sunday, May 22.

Hahn coached Mountaineer women's basketball from 1982-92, racking up 113 victories - including 63 RMAC wins, both Western Colorado women's basketball records. He was inducted into the Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.

Hahn led the Mountaineers to their best season in program history in 1986-87, winning a school-record 22 games (which included a Western-record 12-game winning streak) while winning the RMAC title - Western's last conference title. The Mountaineers went on to win the NAIA District VII championship by defeating CSU Pueblo and Southern Utah to advance to the NAIA Bi-District playoffs where they fell to Fresno Pacific, 65-62.

While going 22-7 in 1986-87, the Mountaineers were a perfect 11-0 at home - one of two perfect home seasons in Western history. It was also part of a program-best 21-game home winning streak that started during the 1985-86 season and lasted until the 1987-88 campaign.

The 1986-87 was in the middle of a run of five-consecutive seasons where the Mountaineers advanced to the postseason, the longest streak in program history.

Hahn didn't leave Western after his coaching career, instead he'd become a figurehead in the business school for numerous years until his retirement. He continued to stay involved at Western Colorado even after retirement in several capacities.

The service for Hahn will be Thursday, May 27, at 6:30 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church (711 N. Main Street in Gunnison).
