GUNNISON, Colo. --- Western Colorado Esports has concluded their regular season of Smash Brothers Ultimate and will have their top players represent WCU Esports in The Collegiate Aces Smash Brothers Playoffs. The tournament will take places on Thursday, Apr. 29 at 4 p.m.
The Western Colorado Smash Brothers team is led by Team Captain
Brandon Lopez (Blur5290RB), with 13 other players on the roster. The team went 5-8 on the season, winning four of their last five games.
Mountaineers
Deagen Fahrney (Deagster), Matthew Hills (DOCX), and
Ricky Jones (Rikjonn) will represent Western Colorado University in the Playoffs, with a chance to win $3,000.
Hills has five individual wins on the season, as he is known for playing with Little Mac and Solid Snake. Matthew had an impressive two stock win in week two of the season over Saint Francis University, along with taking five stocks off Campbellsville University in week 11. DOCX was given the nickname 'One-Stock-Doc' by the announcers during week 11.
In his first year, Fahrney was selected to compete in the All-Star Smash Brothers game as a freshman. Degen is known for playing Wario and King K. Rool. When reflecting on his season Fahrney said, "I had never competed in Smash Bros before I came to Western but it's been really fun to experience competing at the collegiate level. It has exposed me to an all-new side of the game that I never knew existed but I have really enjoyed exploring. This year has been a lot of fun and I am excited to see where we go next year."
Jones led the Mountaineers this season by taking the most stocks, along with recording five individual wins. In week 11, Ricky took nine stocks off Montgomery College, winning the entire match himself. Montgomery College is favored to take first in the league this year. Rikjonn is known for playing as Falco.
