Mountaineers fall to No. 2 Mavericks in the fifth set

GUNNISON, Colo. – Western Colorado volleyball falls to No. 2 Colorado Mesa in a terrific match in Paul Wright Gym on senior day. The Mavericks took home the victory 3-2 (25-18, 24-26, 25-17, 19-25, 16-14), with two sets going into overtime.
 
After losing the first set, the Mountaineers rallied to win the second set in overtime 26-24 to tie it 1-1. From there, Western Colorado struggled in the third set, letting Colorado Mesa outscore them 25-17. Down one set, the Mountaineers needed to win the fourth to stay alive, as they were able to dominate the fourth 25-19, sending the match into a fifth set.
 
In the fifth set, the Mountaineers started out strong building a slow lead. Western Colorado held the lead 14-11 over Colorado Mesa, then the Mavericks scored five straight to clinch the victory.
 
Playing in their last match in Paul Wright Gym were seniors Hanna Hendrickson and Lyria Brook.
 
Hanna Hendrickson recorded 46 assists in the match, with 11 digs, two blocks, two kills, and one service ace.
 
Lyria Brook tied for the most aces with two on the night, along with recording 11 digs. The Mountaineers out served the Mavericks with five aces to Colorado Mesa's one ace.
 
Leading the team with 17 kills was freshman Savanna Meyer, followed by Jordyn Todd with 15 and Caroline Parker with 11 kills.
 
Mayer also led the team in blocks as she recorded four over the five set match, with teammate Elizabeth Koch earning three blocks.
 
It was a team effort to keep the ball alive as four Mountaineers earned over ten digs on the night, with Elizabeth Rupprecht leading the charge with 17 digs as the libero followed by Brook, Hendrickson, and Todd each recording 11 digs.
 
Kaia Ghosh also made an impact with her serving as she earned two service aces on the day.
 
The Mountaineer will be back in action of Sunday, Mar. 28 as they travel to Pueblo, Colorado to play Black Hills State University in a neutral match.
