Ragsdale’s 53-point night not enough

SPEARFISH, S.D.  Matthew Ragsdale went toe-to-toe with Joel Scott from Black Hills State in Friday's game, which was one for the ages. However, while Ragsdale won the matchup scoring a career best 53 points to Scott 50 points, the Yellow Jackets were able to walk away with the 85-80 victory.

JUST THE FACTS
Final Score: Black Hills State def. Western Colorado 85-80.
Records: Western Colorado 1-6, Black Hills State 3-3.
Location: Donald E. Young Center Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Matthew Ragsdale was hot early on making 10-of-13, 2-of-3 from the three-point line on his way to a 24-point first half.
  • Kade Juelfs and Cole Sienknecht were the next highest scorers for Western in the first half each pitching in with four points.
  • Despite the strong start for the Mountaineers, Black Hills State wasn't far behind making 35 points as a team in the first half. But trailed 38-35 heading into halftime.
  • Joel Scott was a huge reason the Yellow Jackets were able to stay in the game and take the victory over the Mountaineers, as he scored a Black Hills State single-game record of 50 points.
  • Ragsdale scored a Mountaineer single-game record of 53 points, and becomes the first player in Western history to score 50 plus points in a single game. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough leading to Western losing 85-80.
  • The Mountaineers shot 50% (29-of-58) from the field, the Yellow Jackets shot 55.2% (32-of-58).

COURT NOTES
  • Western shot better from the three-point line (44%-to-33.3%) and free throw line (87.5%-to-53.6%) compared to Black Hills State.
  • However, the difference in the game was the Mountaineers losing the turnover battle. Western turned the ball over 10 times, while the Yellow Jackets only turned the ball over 5 times.
  • Black Hills State converted those extra possessions into 12 points, compared to the Mountaineers who were only able to score 6 points off turnovers.
  • Sienknecht had the next best night for Western scoring 9 points. For the Yellow Jackets, Sindou Cisse was the second highest scorer with 14 points.
