WCU men rally in final minute to beat Regis in Denver

DENVER, Colo. --- The Western Colorado men's basketball team rallied in the final minute to defeat Regis 81-77 on Saturday at Regis Field House.

The Mountaineers (8-13 overall, 5-10 RMAC) trailed the Rangers (12-9, 7-8) 77-76 with 54 seconds after Regis drained a 3-pointer to take the lead. But WCU answered as Monroe Porter was fouled with 34 seconds remaining and drained both free throws to give the Mountaineers the lead back.

Porter came up big again as he blocked the go-ahead shot attempt by the Rangers and Cole Sienknecht grabbed the rebound and was fouled. The sophomore sank both to make it 80-77 with 11 seconds remaining.

The Rangers missed a game-tying 3-pointer with five seconds remaining, Avery Rembao grabbed the rebound for WCU and James Willis was fouled with three seconds left. After missing the first Willis clinched the game by making the second as WCU picked up its first road victory of the season.

Porter paced the Mountaineers with 24 points, eight rebounds and two assists – including going 10-for-10 from the free-throw line. Freshman Matthew Ragsdale had his fifth 20-point game in his last seven contests with 20 points – going 6-for-13 from 3-point range. Sienknecht had 11 points as well for WCU.

The Mountaineers return to action Friday as they host Dixie State at 7:30 p.m.
