GUNNISON, Colo. ---Â It's a battle for first place Saturday night at Paul Wright Gym as the defending RMAC champion Western Colorado wrestling team hosts No. 9 Colorado School of Mines at 7 p.m.
It's the only two undefeated teams left in the RMAC as the Mountaineers sit at 3-0 while the Orediggers are 4-0 on the season.
The Mountaineers remained undefeated after defeating No. 12 San Francisco State
31-21 on Thursday in Colorado Mesa. WCU jumped out to a 22-0 lead thanks to a 17-7 major decision win by No. 10
Patrick Allis at 125 pounds, pins by
Cody Fatzinger (133) and
Nicholas Braswell (141) and a forfeit at 149 pounds. it was 31-6 after a pin by
Michael Thelen pinned his opponent at 165 and No. 12
Jimmy LaConte picked up a 7-3 win at 174.
All three wins for the unranked Mountaineers have come against ranked opponents (SFSU, Adams State and Chadron State). The Orediggers have three wins over ranked teams in RMAC play (SFSU, CSC and Colorado Mesa) while also picking up a win over New Mexico Highlands.
WCU will be looking to avenge a 25-16 loss to Mines last season - snapping an 18-dual win streak against the Orediggers. Overall, the Mountaineers are 51-22 against Mines all-time.
The Orediggers feature four wrestlers that are ranked heading into Saturday in Robert Gambrell (No. 2 at 174), Weston Hunt (No. 4 at 285), Skyler Lykins (No. 6 at 165) and Anderson Salisbury (No. 12 at 184).
