Mountaineer men fall in overtime at Colorado Christian

LAKEWOOD, Colo. --- The Western Colorado men's basketball team appeared it may come out of the CCU Events Center with a win Saturday over Colorado Christian after Avery Rembao drove to the basket and scored as he was fouled with his free throw giving the Mountaineers a 91-90 lead with 1:09 remaining in overtime.

But the Cougars' Spencer Hoffman hit a go-ahead, fadeaway jumper with 10 seconds left to give them the lead and a 3-point attempt by the Mountaineers was off the iron as they fell 94-92.

The Mountaineers (7-13 overall, 4-10 RMAC) sent the game to overtime against the Cougars (2-18, 2-12) with a pair of clutch free throws by Connor Shaw with two seconds remaining.

Shaw gave the Mountaineers a three-point advantage in overtime when he drained a 3-pointer from the wing at the 2:50 mark to make it 88-85. But a 5-0 run by CCU gave it the lead before Rembao's three-point play with 1:09 left. The game eventually was tied at 92 before Hoffman's jumper with 10 seconds left gave the Cougars the lead for good.

The Mountaineers seemingly had control of the game as they led 79-70 with four minutes left in regulation, but CCU went on a 13-0 run over the next three-plus minutes to take an 83-79 lead before a Jackson Ehrlin bucket in the paint cut the lead to two with 44 seconds left. After a CCU turnover, Shaw was fouled on a mid-range jumper and drained both shots to send the game to overtime.

Freshman Matthew Ragsdale hit double figures for the sixth-consecutive game and 20-plus points for the fourth time in that stretch with a team-high 21 points – going 5-for-10 from 3-point range. Monroe Porter had 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists, Rembao had 15 points, Ehrlin had 11 points, four rebounds and three assists while Shaw had 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.

WCU returns to action 5 p.m. Saturday as the Mountaineers take on Regis in Denver.
