Gorilla Classic comes to an end with Western earning their first victory of the season

PITTSBURG, Kan. --- Western Colorado volleyball wrap up their last two games of the Gorilla Classic Tournament today in John Lance Arena. The Mountaineers won their first game of the season early on Saturday against East Central 3-1 (25-21, 26-28, 25-18, 25-15), then got defeated in their second game of the day against Pittsburg State 3-1 (25-11, 25-19, 20-25, 25-17).
 
During the first game of the day against East Central, the Mountaineers took an early lead winning the first set by a margin of four points 25-21. The second set went into extra points, allowing East Central to win their only set of the match. The Mountaineers then dominated the next two sets (25-18, 25-15) to earn their first victory of the season.
 
Against East Central Jordyn Todd paced the Mountaineers with 15 kills, with teammates Emilee Scates and Kristen Companik closely behind, each with nine kills. Hanna Hendrickson led Western with 35 assists while Todd added a team-high three aces and Lyria Brook had 15 digs.
 
In the second game against the host team of Pittsburg State the Mountaineers got off to a slow start losing the first two sets (25-11, 25-19). In the third set Western found a rhythm, allowing them to win the set 25-20. Pittsburg State regained control and won the match by winning the fourth set 25-17.
 
Against Pittsburg State Todd led the Mountaineers in kills with 13, Skates and Miles Hilbert were closely behind with nine kills each. Hendrickson Led Western with 32 assists while Hilbert and Brook each earned 11 digs during the game.   
 
The Mountaineers will be back in action next weekend as they head to Hays, Kan. to play in the Fort Hays State Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
