MBB | Mountaineers defeat Grizzlies in overtime

GUNNISON, Colo. – It took five extra minutes, but Western Colorado University men's basketball earned an overtime victory over rivals Adams State University on Friday night. The Mountaineers earned their second-straight win with an 87-86 win over the Grizzlies.
 
Western (5-21, 2-18 RMAC) and ASU (10-15, 10-10 RMAC) exchanged baskets to begin the game, but following a Brady Subart three-pointer at the 12:22 mark of the first half, the Mountaineers took control.
 
Subart led the Mountaineers with 23 points. Subart also led all players with six assists.
 
The Mountaineers held the lead for the next 31:02. The Grizzlies took a two-point lead, 77-75 with 1:41 left to play.
 
Western's Jackson Ehrlin tied the game 77-77 with a layup 20 seconds later. Both teams missed an opportunity to take the lead and the two teams headed into overtime.
 
Ehrlin also reached double figures in scoring with 19 points, making nine field goals.
 
In overtime, ASU got out to a five-point lead, 82-77 after the first 57 seconds. With 46 seconds remaining, the Grizzlies held a one-point lead, 84-83.
 
James Willis put the Mountaineers back on top, 86-84, hitting a three-pointer in the corner with 24 seconds remaining. Willis scored 15 points on the night for Western.
 
On ASU's ensuing possession, Szymon Walczak went up for a layup to tie the game. Western's Monroe Porter blocked the shot and came down with the rebound. Porter was fouled and went to the free-throw line. After hitting one-of-two free throws, the Mountaineers led the Grizzlies 87-84.
 
Porter led all players with 16 rebounds.
 
ASU went to the free-throw line with two seconds left and made both attempts. The Mountaineers ran out the clock and earned an 87-86 win.
 
Joran Ticeson also reached double figures, scoring 11 points for the Mountaineers.
 
Western shot 43.1 percent (31-of-72) from the field as a team.
 
The Mountaineers will end the home regular season schedule on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Fort Lewis College in Paul Wright Gym.
