GUNNISON, Colo. --- A victory to remember for the Mountaineer volleyball team as they win in five over the Mountain Lions of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. The Mountaineers clinched the victory in an exciting five set match in Paul Wright Gym winning 3-2 (25-23, 21-25, 22-25, 27-25, 15-12).
The Mountaineers we able to use their home court advantage as they got the crowd on their feet in the electrifying match on Friday night.
Overcoming a 20-13 point deficit in the first set with the help of
Hannah Pethtel earing two consecutive aces, the Mountaineers went on a 12-3 run to send Paul Wright Gym into an uproar. The next two sets Western Colorado played tough, but made one too many errors to let UCCS squeak by going up 2-1 in the match.
With the match on the line in the fourth set the Mountaineers fought through 52 total points as they managed to win 27-25 with a kill by
Jordyn Todd. Giving Western Colorado the well needed momentum going into the fifth set.
The fifth set was all in the Mountaineers favor as they started with a 4-1 lead, then continued to outscore the Mountain Lions to take it to set point at 14-9. The Mountaineers then let three points slip away before taking the victory 15-12.
Statistically the Mountaineers and Mountain Lions were close to identical on paper, aside from Western Colorado doubling them in service aces as the Mountaineers recorded eight on the night. With Hannah Pathtel leading the team to victory with her three service aces, along with recording a team high of 33 assists. Both
Kirsten Companik and
Jordyn Todd recorded 16 kills on the night with
Brianna Hardy earing 12 kills.
Hardy and
Maddy Johnson made a defensive wall as they each recorded three blocks on the night. With
Myles Hilbert as the libero she earned 32 digs while also recording 2 aces.
