Western Colorado wins second consecutive home match

GUNNISON, Colo. --- Mountaineer volleyball wins second straight home game as they defeat the Skyhawks of Fort Lewis on Saturday afternoon. Western Colorado clinched the victory in the fourth set as they beat Fort Lewis 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22).
 
The Mountaineers were aggressive on both defense and offense as both Kirsten Companik and Jordyn Todd recorded 14 individual kills in the match, along with Maddy Johnson and Emilee Scates creating a defensive wall as they each earned five blocks in the four set.
 
After winning the first two then coming off of a loss in the third set the team rallied at the end of the fourth as the Skyhawks held the lead 22-21 over Western Colorado. After an error by Fort Lewis, Maddy Johnson blocked an attack to put the Mountaineers up one. Johnson then earned a kill the next play to put the game into match point. With the game on the line Fort Lewis's Karr Chandler made an attack error to give Western Colorado the victory.
 
In the first and second set the Mountaineers played with confidence, being aggressive where they could and played it safe when needed. Myles Hilbert gave them the start they needed as she served seven straight with three consecutive aces to give the Mountaineers an 8-3 lead. They went on to win 25-22.
 
The second set had an exciting ending as the score was tied 17-17 before Western Colorado earned six  point helping lead them to a 25-19 victory, with an explosive kill from Jordan Todd to close out the set.
 
With Hanna Hendrickson playing every point of the match she recorded 42 assists, 10 digs, two kills, and one ace. Leading the Mountaineers in digs was freshman Jordyn Todd, recording 26 digs with many of those coming off of hard hit attacks. Hilbert recorded 18 digs as Elizabeth Rupprecht earned 11.
 
The Mountaineers will play next week in Paul Wright Gym as they host UCCS on Friday and Colorado School of Mines on Saturday.
