DENVER, Colo. --- Western Colorado volleyball falls to RMAC rivals MSU-Denver in the third set, losing 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-20). The Mountaineers (7-8 overall, 3-4 RMAC) now drop to 3-4 in the conference after Saturday afternoon's loss.
The Roadrunners took an early five-point lead in the first set which allowed them to take control of the game. Western Colorado tried to close the gap, but the Roadrunners (11-3 overall, 6-0 RMAC) continued to extend their lead and went on to win with a nine-point lead, 25-16.
MSU-Denver maintained their intensity from the first set and had another strong start to the second set. The Roadrunners were able to build up a six-point lead, 9-3. The Mountaineers battled back and were able to close the gap to three points, 17-14. Western Colorado was unable to close the gap and succumbed to a 25-18 loss.
The Mountaineers took an early lead in the third set, going up 6-4. The momentum then shifted, and MSU-Denver took a four-point lead, 15-11. The Mountaineers then closed the gap tying it 18-18, only to let the Roadrunners outscore them 7-2 – causing them to lose the set 25-20 and letting MSU-Denver walk away with the victory.
Leading WCU in kills was junior
Emilee Scates who was able to record seven kills in the three sets played. Juniors
Hanna Hendrickson and
Lyria Brook also contributed, as Hendrickson recorded 11 assists and Brook had 15 digs on the night.
Jordyn Todd also recorded seven digs during the match.
The Mountaineers will be back on the court on Friday at 7 p.m. as they travel to Regis University, then on Saturday they face off against Colorado Christian University in Lakewood at 5 p.m.
