GUNNISON, Colo. --- Western Colorado swimming and diving hosted their first meet of the year as they dueled against No. 10 ranked Colorado Mesa University. The Mavericks competed hard in the thin air of Gunnison as they won the meet, outscoring the Mountaineers 196 to 95.
As a top contender in the nation the Mavericks showed why they are considered one of the best, as they broke six pool records in Paul Wright Natatorium. Despite the tough competition the Mountaineers managed to swim some fast times setting season bests among many of the athletes.
The Mountaineers used the altitude to their advantage in the distance events as
Arden Tesch and
Sydney Skiles finished second and third in the 1,000 yard freestyle, Tesch finishing in a time of eleven minutes and two seconds with Skiles coming in behind her at 11:26.73.
Lauren Sanders also used the altitude to her advantage in the 500 yard freestyle as she clocked a time of 5:30.67 to finish with the third fastest time.
Finishing second in the 100 yard back stroke was Western Colorado's
Savannah Tice as she swam 58.19 seconds.
Alex Johnson the senior from Laramie, Wyoming also swam herself to a third place finish in the 100 yard breaststroke, finishing in 1:09.44.
The Mountaineers will be back in the water again this Saturday as they head to Pueblo to dual the Thunderwolves of Colorado State University Pueblo.
