Western Colorado volleyball sweeps Cougars on the road

LAKEWOOD, Colo. --- Western Colorado volleyball breaks three game losing streak after sweeping the Cougars on the road. The Mountaineers won 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-21) against Colorado Cristian in the CCU Event Center on Saturday night.
 
Western Colorado (8-9 overall, 4-5 RMAC) took control early in the match as they had five kills in their first seven points, all coming from a different Mountaineer. They then went on a 4-0 run to take an 11-7 lead with Maddy Johnson serving. The Cougars (6-11 overall, 2-7 RMAC) kept it close as they got within two at 22-20, but then the Mountaineers went on a 3-0 run to clinch the first set. With Myles Hilbert serving a game winning ace.
 
The Mountaineers dominated the third set with Lyria Brook serving a 7-0 run. Western Colorado went on to win 25-19 with another game winning ace, this time coming from Jordyn Todd.
 
The team carried their momentum into the third set as the Mountaineers went on a 4-0 run to start the set. Starting with an ace from Hanna Hendrickson then three consecutive kills, two from Emilee Scates and one from Todd. The Cougars tried to recover and came within one point at 20-19, but then the Mountaineers went on a 5-2 run to close out the match in three.
 
The Mountaineers finally dialed in their serving as they only had three service errors and recorded eight aces on the night.  Lyria Brook, Hanna Hendrickson, and Maddy Johnson each recorded two individual aces. Hendrickson also led the team in assists with 30 as Jordyn Todd recorded a team high of 11 kills. Brooks earned 19 digs with Myles Hilbert closely behind with 17 digs. Emilee Scates, Brianna Hardy, and Johnson each earned two blocks in the three set match.
 
Western Colorado volleyball will be back in action at Paul Wright Gym next Friday and Saturday as they are set to play South Dakota Mines (pink night) on Friday and Black Hills State (family night) on Saturday.
