WBB | Mountaineers continue winning ways against ASU

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Western Colorado University women's basketball made it five wins in-a-row Saturday night. The Mountaineers held Adams State University at bay long enough to secure a 60-56 win and maintain a perfect 6-0 record.

Western (12-3, 8-3 RMAC) took a 12-point lead into the fourth quarter and looked to be cruising to their 12th victory of the season. However, against rivals ASU (1-14, 1-10 RMAC) no lead is safe.

The Grizzlies chopped the Mountaineer lead to just two points, 52-50, with 4:33 left to play. That's when Tammarrah Gothard knocked down a deep three-point field goal to put Western back ahead by five. On the ensuing ASU possession, Gothard picked the pocket of Adams State's point guard and converted the fast-break layup to give Western a seven point lead, 57-50, with 3:48 to play.

Western was able to secure the victory with three Jessie Erickson free throws down the stretch.

The win is Western's fifth straight and ninth in the last 10 games. The Mountaineers are 11-0 this season when scoring 60 or more points.

Samantha Coleman led the Mountaineers in scoring with 14 points. It's the eighth consecutive game Coleman has scored in double figures.

Gothard and Katie Najvar also reached double-digits in points. Each added 11 points, while Najvar recorded seven rebounds and Gothard added five rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Western shot 42.9 percent (18-of-42) from the field and outrebounded ASU 30-20.

The Mountaineers have now defeated Adams State in five straight games over the course of three seasons.

Western continues to maintain third place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings, three games behind conference leaders Colorado Mesa University and Westminster College.

The Mountaineers will get their first shot at Westminster next Friday night at 5:30 p.m. in Paul Wright Gym.
