VB | Eagles overcome Mountaineers at Paul Wright

GUNNISON, Colo. – In the second game of the weekend, Western Colorado University took on Chadron State College in pursuit of their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win of the season. Unfortunately, Western will continue looking as the Eagles were too much for the Mountaineers. Chadron took the match in three sets, 25-18, 25-21, 25-14.

After a slow start, Western (1-14, 0-7 RMAC) got right into the thick of things with Chadron State (3-11, 1-5 RMAC) in the second set. Throughout the start of the set, the Mountaineers traded points with the Eagles until Chadron took the 12-8 edge.

But with five-straight points, Western would regain the advantage over Chadron 13-12. The two teams continued to trade points before Chadron capitalized on a 22-17 lead to close out the set. The Eagles took the second set 25-21.

Down two sets, Western needed a win to keep the match alive.

Unable to muster their offense in the third, Western dropped the set 25-14.

Individually, Kirsten Companik and Kathleen Kasel had strong matches for the Mountaineers. Companik registered 10 kills for a match high while hitting at her second-highest percentage of the season (.318). To her credit, Kasel recorded nine kills on .304 hitting in the match.

Hannah Hendrickson dished out 29 assists across the match.

Next week, Western continues the homestand as they welcome Colorado Christian and Regis University to Paul Wright Gym on Friday and Saturday.
