GUNNISON, Colo. – Western Colorado University began their homestand tonight against Metropolitan State University of Denver. Despite starting strong in the first set, Western went down in three 25-18, 25-13, 25-12.
Western (1-13, 0-6 RMAC) got off to a fast start in the first, opening a 7-2 lead. But a strong-willed MSU-Denver (8-5, 4-1 RMAC) team worked their way back into the set, knotting the score at 14-14. A five-point Roadrunner run put the Mountaineers behind for good as they dropped the first set 25-18.
In the second and third sets, Western played on their heels, trying to defend against a potent Roadrunner offense. Across the match, Western tallied 47 digs as MSU-Denver hit .354 and .258, respectively, to close out the second and third sets.
MSU-Denver closed out the match with 25-13 and 25-12 set wins.
Cammi Baumann tied the match high with 17 digs for Western.
Emilee Scates led Western with five kills, hitting .105 on the night while Hannah Hendrickson earned 17 assists. Hendrickson's tally was a match high.
Western returns to the court tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. as they host Chadron State in Paul Wright Gym. The match will be a Pack the House event as Western looks to go 'Eagle Hunting.' All fans are encouraged to wear camouflage in support of the hunt for the win.
