VB | Western goes down swinging at Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – In an early week match up, Western State Colorado University traversed the Western Slope for a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference clash with Colorado Mesa University. Unfortunately it was a quick trip for Western as they went down in three sets to Colorado Mesa (13-25, 22-25, 17-25).

Western (1-10, 0-3 RMAC) went down swinging as Colorado Mesa (8-3, 3-0) improved its win streak to six consecutive matches. In just three sets, the Mountaineers amassed 98 total attacks but struggled to terminate on the night.

Having dropped the first set, 13-25, Western came out strong in the second set. Leading 5-4 in the early goings, Western would continue to play Colorado Mesa point for point throughout. At one point, the Mountaineers allowed the Mavericks a five-point edge before scoring three straight points to bring it to 22-23. But Mesa would close out the final points of the set taking it 25-22.

Western kept swinging in the third set, taking the edge in attacks 36-31 on the set, but could not come up with the necessary points to overcome Colorado Mesa. The Mavericks took the final set 25-17 to close the match.

Hannah Hendrickson dished out a match high 22 assists as Cierra Abbott and Chelsea Bostwick carried the scoring load for Western with six kills apiece.

Cammi Baumann lead the Mountaineer defense with 14 digs across the match.

Western returns to action this weekend as they tour Utah. On Friday, Western will play Dixie State University before heading to Salt Lake City for a matchup with Westminster College.
