LARAMIE, Wyo. – Four Western State Colorado University wrestlers competed at the Cowboy Open in Laramie, Wyoming on Saturday. Those Mountaineers earned five wins while other Western wrestlers competed unattached.
 
Colby Duncan highlighted the day for the Mountaineers. Duncan made it into the semifinals of the 125-pound Amateur Division by three falls in his first three bouts. The first round fall was against Nick Kunz, wrestling unattached. In the second match, Duncan pinned Northwest College's Rocky Ciminera in the third round.
 
In the quarterfinals, Duncan fell behind 6-2 in the first period after three takedowns by Aaron Cashman, wrestling unattached. Starting on bottom in the second period, Duncan earned an escape after 29 seconds. With 10 seconds remaining, Duncan scored his first takedown of the match. With one second remaining, Duncan pinned Cashman and moved into the semifinals.
 
In the semifinals, Duncan and Clackamas Community College's DeVaughn Sapien were tied going into the third period. Starting the period on bottom, Sapien escaped, taking a one-point lead, 3-2. Duncan would earn a takedown but a riding time point for Sapien forced an overtime period. Sapien was first to score a takedown and won the match 6-4 in sudden victory.
 
Moving into the consolation semifinals against Tate Withington of Northwest Kansas Technical College, Duncan took a 3-1 lead after two periods. Withington scored four points in the third to win the match, 5-3.
 
Diego Calderon won two matches in the 149-pound Amateur Division, both by decision. Calderon defeated Colorado School of Mines' Ryan Carpenter 5-1. In his next bout, Calderon outlasted Benjamin Rodriguez in a nine period marathon to move into the quarterfinals, before falling in his next two matches.
 
Kris Davis received a first-round bye in the 285-pound Amateur Division. Davis would lose his next two matches.
 
Competing in the 165-pound Amateur Division for the Mountaineers was Michael Thelen. After losing in the first round to Division I Utah Valley University, Thelen received a bye and was defeated in the second round consolation match.
 
Mountaineer wrestling will be back on the mat next Wednesday against Colorado Mesa University in the "Dual on the Diamond" on the Maverick's baseball field, Suplizio Field, in Grand Junction, Colorado. The dual is set to begin at 6 p.m.
