GUNNISON, Colo. – On Saturday, the Western State Colorado University women's basketball team plays their first home game of the season against Westminster College. With tip-off set for 5:30 p.m. fans are encouraged to come early to receive a free foam finger. Costumes are encouraged for fans coming to support the Mountaineers. The fan with the best costume will win a Western Women's Basketball shirt.
After seven straight away games to open the season, Western plays their first game in the confines of Paul Wright Gym on Saturday.
Western (3-4, 0-1 RMAC) returns to the court following their first RMAC contest versus Colorado Mesa on Tuesday.
A young Mountaineer squad continues to be paced by a trio of freshman in
Katie Dalton,
Jessie Erickson, and
Keelie Lawler. All three women have taken a turn in the spotlight through the first seven games.
Playing aggressively on defense, Western ranks sixth in the RMAC in points allowed per game at 60.1. The Mountaineers are also forcing opponents into 19 turnovers a game. Leading the turnover attack for Western is
Tammarrah Gothard who currently sits atop the conference with 21 steals for an average of three per game.
Against Westminster (1-3, 0-0 RMAC), the Mountaineers see a team on a three game skid, including an exhibition loss to DI Weber State. While scoring nearly 60 points a game on efficient shooting, the Griffins have allowed an average of 66.3 points per game. Paced by the statistical twins, Hunter Krebs and Denise Gonzalez who average 11 and 10 points a game along with five rebounds.
