ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Western State Colorado University women's basketball grabbed their first win of the season on Friday evening. The Mountaineers defeated the University of Alaska Fairbanks 49-41 in the first game of the Seawolf Hoops Classic in Anchorage, Alaska.

Western (1-2, 0-0 RMAC) led for almost the entirety of the game against AF (1-2, 0-0 GNAC), with the exception of two ties in the second quarter.

The Mountaineers got out to a quick 13-6 lead after the first quarter. Guard
Carra Jackson-Brown scored Western's first five points of the game.

Fairbanks would climb back into the game in the second, but a jumper by Western's
Tammarrah Gothard with 11 seconds left, gave the Mountaineers a 22-20 lead at halftime.

Gothard led Western in scoring with 10 points while dishing out a game-high five assists, and recording a game-high five steals. This earned Gothard the Game One Seawolf Hoops Classic Player of the Game.

Western extended the lead in the third quarter and were ahead by 10 points, 38-28, heading into the fourth quarter.

After two free throws by Western's
Jadyn Kanzler, the Mountaineers were up 16 points with 2:45 left to play, their largest lead of the game.

The Nanooks would then go on an 8-0 run to end the game, but it wasn't enough as Western took a 49-41 win.

Western out-rebounded Fairbanks 47-40 and converted 22 Nanook turnovers into 15 points.

The Mountaineers will face host school University of Alaska Anchorage Saturday night at 7:15 p.m. (MT) in the final game of the Seawolf Hoops Classic.
