VB | Western drops four-set match to Adams to close the 2017 season

ALAMOSA, Colo. – In their final match of the season, Western (2-25, 1-17 RMAC) dropped a four-set decision to RMAC rival Adams State (14-13, 10-8 RMAC).

The Mountaineers sprung out to an early lead in Alamosa, taking Plachy Gym by storm with a 25-21 win in the opening set. Down 8-15 midway through the first frame, the Mountaineers launched an impressive attack to regain the lead 20-19 off consecutive kills by Kathleen Kasel. The Mountaineers would not relinquish that lead as they went on to the set win.

In the second and third sets, Western struggled to maintain their momentum, going down early in both sets, chasing Adams the remainder of the way. In both sets, attack errors got the best of the Mountaineers at the net as the Western hit .094 on the night.

Adams would take the second set 25-16 before moving to a 25-12 third set victory. Mallory Grimsrud lead the attack for the Grizzlies, posting 12 kills on .346 hitting.

In the fourth set, the Mountaineers regained their momentum and battled the Grizzlies point for point. The fourth set saw 10 ties in scoring before Western took the lead 25-24. But consecutive attack errors on the Mountaineers and a Grimsrud kill would seal the deal for the Grizzlies, 27-25.

Kiki Johnson lead the Mountaineers with a match high 14 kills while hitting .250 on the night. Not far behind, Kathleen Kasel tied Adams States' Grimsrud with 12 kills on the match as she hit .258 in the process. Both Johnson and Kasel notched their second highest kill totals on the season in the last match of the year.

In four sets, setter Hannah Hendrickson dished out a match high 45 assists to help the Mountaineers earn 48 kills in the match. Hendrickson's tally was just four assists shy of her career high set against Black Hills State.

The young Mountaineers finish their season 2-25, 1-17 in the RMAC with off-season development to come.
