LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Despite not taking a free throw attempt in the first half, Western State Colorado University mounted a second-half comeback on 19 second half foul shots against Colorado Christian University Friday evening to upset the Cougars, 92-90, in their house. Western takes its two-game winning streak to Golden, Colorado, to take on the second-ranked Colorado Mines in another key Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup.
Â
The comeback began in the final 10 minutes of the game. Western was down, 77-64, when Western entered attack mode. Of the final 28 points Western scored, 15 came from the foul line. In fact Western scored 11 straight points from the line and did not miss a free throw in the final 10 minutes of the game. The team finished the game shooting 19 of 21 from the foul line for a season-high 90 percent.
Â
The Mountaineers would not be silenced, stealing the lead with 13 seconds remaining in the game. Western led for only a full minute in the beginning of the game and a few seconds in the end of the first half, but trailed throughout until they overtook the lead on a pair of free throws from freshman
Monroe Porter. Seven seconds later and a forced turnover sent
Will Duggan to the line to finish off the Cougars.
Â
Duggan led the Mountaineers in scoring, but the ball was distributed well this evening as five Mountaineers made it into double-digits. Duggan was six of 12 from the field, including three-of-five from beyond the arc. Behind him was
Brady Subart, who scored 15. Duggan and Subart combined for 15 points in the final 10 minutes to lead the comeback.
Â
The two guards were joined in the scoring by
Collin Smith with 14,
Ben Beauchamp with 11 and
Ray Beresford with 10. Beauchamp had a team-high five assists, while Smith led the team on the glass with six boards.
Â
Western's defense held strong in the final minutes, holding the Cougars to 13 points in the final 10 minutes. The defensive lockdown was the key to the game, as the Cougars were hot. Brett Brady led all scorers with 23 points, and was joined by Ty McGee with 20. Christian nearly had three players in the 20 point range, as Dimitri Saliba had 19 points in the loss.
Â
With the win Western is on a two-game win streak, the first win streak since March of 2013. The Mountaineers successfully upset the third-ranked team in the conference, and will face the second-ranked team tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. in Golden.
