WSOC | Western back in action this weekend

GUNNISON, Colo. – Mountaineer women's soccer returns to Gunnison this Friday afternoon. Western State Colorado University will host Angelo State University at 3 p.m. on Gateway Field. The Mountaineers will then travel to face Black Hills State University on Sunday.

Friday will be the first matches between Western, ASU and BHSU in program history. Friday will also be the final non-conference match of the season for Western before they begin Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play against BHSU on Sunday. Western is 1-1-1 in RMAC openers, having defeated Metro State University Denver 1-0 last season.

Fans can follow both games via live stats. A live video stream will also be available for Western's home game against ASU.

Western (2-1-1, 0-0 RMAC) is looking to bounce back after suffering their first defeat of the season at the hands of San Francisco State University. The Mountaineers fell to the Gators, 2-0 last Saturday. It was also the first goals allowed by the Mountaineers in 2016, after starting the season with three shutouts.

ASU (3-0-1, 0-0 LSC) has yet to lose a match this season. The Rams have defeated three other RMAC programs and tied RMAC school Fort Lewis College, 0-0. ASU has allowed only one goal in four matches this season and is ranked fourth in the South Central Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

For the Rams, Demi Tsambasis has scored five of the team's seven goals this season.

Prior to Friday's match, ASU will face Colorado Mesa University on Wednesday in Gunnison at 3 p.m. Although the match is being played on Gateway Field, Mountaineer Athletic Association passes and free Western student ID's will not be accepted at the gate.

Leading the Mountaineer offense is outside midfielder Jessica Kresl (Jr., Aztec, New Mexico). Kresl leads the team in shots with 16 and goals with two, and also ranks second in the conference in both those categories.

Western goalkeeper Katie Simpson-Johnson (Jr., Boulder, Colorado) ranks second in the conference with 30 saves this season. Her .938 save percentage is also second best in the RMAC.

First-year program BHSU (0-3, 0-0 RMAC) faces RMAC opponent UC-Colorado Springs on Friday before hosting Western in Spearfish, South Dakota. The Yellowjackets are in search of their first win in program history.
