FB | Western faces Chadron in key RMAC matchup

GUNNISON, Colo. - Western State Colorado University football will travel to Chadron, Nebraska for the first road game of the season for the Mountaineers. Western will play Chadron State College at 12 p.m. this Saturday in Don Beebe Stadium.

This Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game between Western (1-1, 1-1 RMAC) and CSC (1-1, 1-1 RMAC) is a very important game for both teams. After each team suffered a loss to Colorado Mesa University and both teams picking up a win, this matchup could be critical in the final RMAC standings. Western was picked to finish third in the Preseason RMAC Coaches' Poll and CSC was picked to finish fourth.

Fans unable to make Saturday's home opener will be able to follow all the action live over the internet (live statslive video) and social media (@WSCUMountaineer@MountaineerFB).

OTHER NOTES

SERIES HISTORY
Saturday's game will mark the 33rd meeting between the two schools. After winning 10 of the first 14 meetings, Chadron has won the last 18. 

Western's last victory against the Eagles came on Oct. 4, 1997 when the Mountaineers won 16-14 in Mountaineer Bowl. 

In Chadron, Western is 4-12. The last win on the road against CSC came in 1995 when the Mountaineers won 28-21. Western also was the RMAC Champion in 1995. 

FIRST TIME ON THE ROAD
After starting the season at home for the first two games of the season, Western will travel for their first of six road games in 2016. This will also be the first time in program history the Mountaineers will play CSC in the road opener.

Over the past decade, the Mountaineers are 1-9 in their first road games of the season. However, four of those games were against Division I opponents.  

In road openers, the Mountaineers have an all-time record of 24-63-3, dating back to 1922.

LAST WEEK
WESTERN - After losing the season opener, the Mountaineers rebounded with a 56-25 win over Adams State University in the 70th Colorado Classic. It was the fourth time in two years that Western broke the half-century mark in scoring.

The Mountaineer defense produced 12 points, and special teams returned a blocked extra point for two points.

Brett Arrivey led the game in passing with 189 yards and two passing touchdowns. Austin Ekeler led the game in rushing with 123 yards and three touchdowns. Backup quarterback Cameron Shumway also ran for 109 yards. It was the first time since 2004 that two or more Western players ran for 100 or more yards.

Jordan Woodyard led the Mountaineers in tackles with 10. Woodyard also recorded one sack, one pass breakup, three quarterback hurries, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery for a touchdown.

CSC - After opening the season with a 17-10 win over Fort Lewis College at home, CSC lost to Colorado Mesa University 47-33 on the road.

Quarterbacks TD Stein and Matt Vinson combined for 433 yards and two touchdowns. Kevin Coy led the ground attack, rushing for a team high 49 yards. Dereck Jackson scored two rushing touchdowns. Max Gray led the team in receiving with 190 yards.

For the second consecutive week, CSC's special teams scored on a blocked punt.

Defensively, Joshua Courtland led the game in tackling for the Eagles. Courtland recorded nine tackles and one tackle for a loss.

HALL OF FAME GAME
Saturday was Western's Hall of Fame Game. The Friday night before, Western Athletics inducted former women's diver Mary Ann Anderson (Zeylmaker), football player James Hawkins, track and field athlete Jerry Hollingshead, distance runner Dennis Leck, and Ed Ali as the Lifetime Athletic Achievement Award Recipient into the Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame. The class of 2016 is the 22nd class to enter the MSHOF.

After defeating Adams State 56-25 in the 70th Colorado Classic, Western is 3-4 in Hall of Fame games since 2010. The Mountaineers have won the three of the past four, defeating New Mexico Highlands University in 2013 by a score of 33-27, Black Hills State University in 2014 by a score of 34-13, and losing 31-24 to Chadron State College last season.
