MBB | Hopkins makes history in Mountaineer win

GUNNISON – Danny Hopkins saved the best for last. The senior went off for 40 points in his final game in Paul Wright Gymnasium, as Western State Colorado University defeated Colorado Christian University, 100-89, Saturday evening.

This was the first game since January of 2009 that the Mountaineers hit the century mark. Western was on fire, making 48 percent of their field goals from both the floor and the arc. The team also shot 85 percent from the foul line.

Hopkins' 40 points came from 12 of 19 shooting from the floor, including shooting seven of 11 from downtown. Hopkins hit from everywhere, including 30 feet out on a halftime buzzer beater to give the Mountaineers a one point lead going into half. Hopkins only had 13 points in the first half, but went off for four treys, seven free throws and four jump shots in the second half for 27 points. Hopkins was a perfect nine of nine from the foul line in the game, and dished out four assists.

With his performance, Hopkins enters the Mountaineer record books. Hopkins is the fourth Mountaineer to hit 40 in a game, and is tied for the fourth-best scoring performance in school history. The record of 46 was set by George Rausch in 1965, in a game where he made 21 shots and attempted twice as many. Hopkins' seven 3-pointers is also tied for second in the history books for most made deep shots in a game.

Hopkins was not alone though, in fact in the first half and the final minute Brady Subart was the hero. Subert hit three treys in a span of a minute in the beginning of the game to keep the Mountaineers close. In the final minutes he was put to the foul line six times and sank every shot to ensure the victory. Subert finished with 18 points and five boards.

Other amazing shooting performances came from senior C.J. Schutt, shooting four-of-four from the field and four-of-four from the foul line for 12 points and seven boards. Chances Matlock was also a perfect six-for-six from the foul line.

Despite the amazing performances, the game was still a dog fight with 11 ties and 10 lead changes. The Cougars dominated down low, outscoring the Mountaineers 54 to 18 in the paint. Western countered by sinking 15 3-pointers and 33 free throws.
