ALAMOSA, Colo. –
Will Duggan went off for a season-high 20 points, including the game winning three-pointer as the clock hit zero, to lift Western State Colorado University men's basketball team to a 99-98 victory over Adams State University.
The two teams went at it, trading leads a total of five times with six ties in the ball game. Adams State (12-12, 11-8 RMAC) had the upper hand at half, leading by two, 50-48. Ironically it was
Will Duggan with the ball in his hand as the first half buzzer went off, attempting a deep shot that got blocked. Duggan would not be stopped at the end of regulation though, as the Mountaineers (5-20, 4-15 RMAC) came down the court with the ball and a dozen ticks left on the clock. Before crossing half the ball was poked away, and originally ruled Adams State ball, but after review was overturned, giving the Mountaineers another chance.
With seven seconds left and down by two points, Western inbounded the ball to
Danny Hopkins, who was trapped at the baseline and intelligently threw the ball off of a Grizzly defender and out of bounds. With less than four seconds remaining,
Will Duggan caught the inbounds pass in front of his team's bench, split two Adams State defenders, elevated from 21 feet out and sank the game winning shot. The Mountaineers stormed the court and piled on Duggan, and after official review, erupted in celebration for the upset.
Duggan led the Mountaineers in scoring with 20 points. The point guard was seven of nine from the floor, a perfect four-for-four from the foul line, and dished out five assists. Big man
C.J. Schutt and sharp-shooter
Ray Beresford each putting up 14 points and missing only a single shot from the floor.
Ben Beauchamp chipped in 13 points, while
Danny Hopkins scored a dozen and tore down a team-high nine boards.
The Mountaineers limited themselves to just nine turnovers in the game. The team did most of their work down low, scoring 44 points in the paint, but got help off the bench with 31 bench points. Offensive rebounds were key as well, as Western scored 26 points in second chance points off of 14 offensive boards.
