MBB | Mountaineers rewrite history in win over Warriors

GUNNISON – Western State Colorado University men's basketball put up 118 points in a victory over Dine College Saturday evening in Paul Wright Gymnasium. The Mountaineers finish with a 1-1 record in the 2016 Comfort Inn Classic to finish tied for second with Colorado Mesa. Wayland Baptist went undefeated in the tournament to take the crown.
 
The 118 points is the second-most scored by the Mountaineers in regulation, barely missing the record set in 1989 of 120. In addition, the 46 points the Warriors scored was the third-fewest allowed in regulation, and the 72 point margin of victory is the most in school history, 16 more than the previous record set in 2000. Western also had third-lowest field goal percentage allowed at 27.5 percent, and had the second-most team assists with 32.
 
Seven Mountaineers scored in double-digits, led by Branden Cosby-Lee with 20. Cosby-Lee was joined by Brady Subart with 17, Zach Madlom with 15, Ben Beauchamp with 15, Collin Smith with 13, and Ray Beresford and Patrick Sniff with 10 apiece. Cosby-Lee was eight of nine from the field, while Subart was six of seven and five of five from deep.
 
Sniff dominated the boards for Western, earning a double-double 10 points and 10 boards. He was joined by Subart, who had nine boards.
 
Monroe Porter had a quarter of the team's assist with eight, while Beauchamp and James Willis had six each.
 
Western scored 64 points in the paint, 50 more than their opponent. The Mountaineers also scored 40 points in the fast break and had 55 bench points. Western out-rebounded their opponent by 44 board and had 26 more assists.
 
The Mountaineers head to Grand Junction to compete in the Colorado Mesa Holiday Tournament next weekend. After they return to Paul Wright on Tuesday, November 29th, to take on Colorado Mesa for the team's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener.
