VB | Mountaineers rally back for home win

GUNNISON – Western State Colorado University women's volleyball team rallied back down 2-1 to win a five-set match against New Mexico Highlands in Gunnison. The Mountaineers (8-7, 4-3 RMAC) look to take on the Thunderwolves of CSU-Pueblo tomorrow evening at 7 p.m.
 
Fifteen different Mountaineers saw action in the wild match, and the new-look Western team found late magic to take down Highlands, led by Caroline Hansen's 24 kills and 17 digs. The Cowgirls outhit the Mountaineers .243 to .191, but the Mountaineer's nine team blocks and holding the Cowgirls to .000 hitting percentage in the fifth set led to the win.
 
Tori Gaherty and Molly Hothan were outstanding for the Mountaineers. Gaherty had a season-high 21 kills, while Hothan had 17 kills and hit .452. They were joined by Jordan Eatwell's 12 kills.
 
With the new look, the Mountaineer's had two setters play, led by Allison Walker's 44 assists. Freshman Kitt Campbell came in for 10 assists and a pair of aces.
 
Defensively, Amanda Maestas had an excellent game with 26 digs and four aces. She was protected up from by Avery Burkholder's six blocks and Hothan's four.
