SWIM | Mavericks fly past Mountaineers

GUNNISON – Eight pool records were set as two of the top swimming and diving programs in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference met this morning in the Paul Wright Natatorium. Western State Colorado University fell to Colorado Mesa University, 191-97, in one of the fastest meets in Gunnison to date.

The Mountaineers won three individual events, taking down one pool record in the process. Randi Yarnell broke the pool record in the 100 fly, shattering the previous time by two seconds with a mark of 58.74. Her time will put her in the top-20 without altitude conversion.

Yarnell also took home the 200 free win by seven seconds. The other win came from Frances Ivers in the 1,000, winning by 14 seconds.

For Mesa, Mary Saiz won four events and set four pool records, including being part of the 400 medley relay. Her 50 free time of 24.19 puts her 11th in the nation without altitude conversion.

The Mountaineers return to action when they host CSU-Pueblo on Nov. 18.
