GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Despite holding the Mavericks to the second-lowest set in conference play this season, Western State Colorado University (11-10, 7-6 RMAC) could not overcome their rival to the West, losing to Colorado Mesa University (17-4, 11-2 RMAC) in four sets (25-27, 25-12, 20-25, 22-25).
Â
For the second time this season the Mountaineers have played the Mavericks well, and for the second time have kept them under 12 points in a set. Western did so at home earlier this season, holding the Mavericks to just 11 points. Unlike last game though, Western scored at least 20 points in every set and continued to pressure the second-ranked team in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Â
Tori Gaherty continued her kill streak, putting down 17 kills while hitting a match-high .325 against the top-ranked defense in the conference. She was joined by
Molly Hothan with 12 kills and
Jordan Eatwell with 11.
Allison Walker put up 46 assists in the match.
Â
The Maverick offense attacked
Logan Franek, who responded with outstanding numbers. Franek put up a team-high 20 digs.
Amanda Maestas and
Caiden Rexius relieved the pressure with 15 and 13 digs, respectfully.
Â
The two teams matched up closely statistically, separated by just single point, block and attack error. The Mountaineers actually outhit the Mavericks, hitting .212 against a team that normally holds teams to a hitting percentage south of .150.
Â
Western will recover for a single-match trip to Salt Lake City Saturday to take on Westminster College.
